International Year of Chemistry 2011
2011, the International Year of Chemistry. A unique opportunity for the chemical community to put chemistry back on the map; to tell people about its achievements; to enthuse them about its creative future; to listen to people’s needs and their hopes, as we are striving for a sustainable world.
Chemistry is a vital part of almost everything we do. But this is only part of the story we’ve got to tell. Chemistry constantly innovates: it’s a vital part of the solutions we need to tackle tomorrow’s challenges. Some people know that . Many don’t. And that’s why all across Europe, our members are engaging with the public, with young people, wherever they are.
It’s about showing how inventive chemistry is, and how exciting a career in chemistry can be. It’s about engaging with people, as people. It’s also about marvelling and hoping, believing in our ability to face the toughest challenges ahead – feeding 9 billion people in 2050, ensuring access to water, sustainable mobility and housing.
National chemical federations have not waited for 2011 to show how inventive they are. And they are determined to make the year a success. The Cefic network will allow us all to multiply the impact of our activities, to develop transnational partnerships, to make chemistry speak with one, clear, loud voice all across Europe.
And this is just the beginning. Today, you are seeing what is happening in a few countries in Europe. Watch this space. There will be much more. And we hope that we will keep the momentum going. We hope that, come the end of the year, we will all continue telling the story of chemistry, and upholding its vital role in a sustainable future.
