Event Details

This event is closed.

The application of the ATEX directive and its UK implementation through DSEAR by companies has been shown to be of variable quality.  DSEAR sets minimum requirements for the protection of workers from risks related to dangerous substances.

Dangerous substances are substances used or present at work that could, if not properly controlled, cause harm to people as a result of a fire or explosion, or corrosion of metal. They can be found in nearly all workplaces and include such things as solvents, paints, varnishes, flammable gases such as liquid petroleum gas (LPG), dusts from machining and sanding operations, dusts from foodstuffs, pressurised gases and substances corrosive to metal.

Common criticisms of DSEAR implementation have included:

  • Lack of understanding of DSEAR

  • Ineffective application of or failure to implement guidance

  • Inconsistency of application

  • Failure to integrate DSEAR into the wider Process Safety Management System

  • Failure of management to understand, and thereby adequately resource, DSEAR duties.

This course will address the common failings and present a structured, process driven approach to maintaining compliance with the regulations. It will cover underpinning knowledge along with practical examples and case studies and provide opportunities to understand the implications for your own organisation.
