The Chemical Industry Awards took place virtually for the first time on 17 June, with some 200 guests and nominees taking part in the event hosted by broadcaster Chris Hollins.

Guests and nominees gathered online to celebrate the achievements of the sector, throughout what has been an incredibly challenging year, but one in which chemical businesses have responded tremendously to provide the core materials and products to keep us going through the pandemic.

CIA Chief Executive, Steve Elliott opened the event by praising the incredible efforts of the industry, the significant contribution we make to the UK economy and notably, the level of political visibility and recognition the sector now has.

Steve said "Workforces have turned up for every single shift, right across the land, to operate chemical plants in the strictest of safety environments -  enabling the vital work they do to continue, so that essential products and solutions can be delivered to customers. So when we see PPE being worn in hospitals and of course elsewhere; when we see hand sanitiser being made available in every walk of life;  and when we see oxygen, medicines and, most stunningly, vaccines being made available to all of us, let us pause for a minute and remember that this has all come about through the work taking place in chemical company laboratories and factories. What a wonderfully inspirational response in the face of such a global challenge - well done to the entire UK chemical industry workforce."
