Today marked an important moment for the UK chemical industry with the launch of the Chemical Industries Association's Manifesto in Parliament. This initiative outlines a comprehensive vision aimed at positioning the UK chemical industry as a central driver of economic, environmental, and social progress.

The manifesto sets several key recommendations intended to inform and support the upcoming government's agenda for growth and prosperity:

  • A UK Industrial strategy with chemical businesses at its heart

  • A stable UK policy environment

  • Innovation incentivised to lead to UK manufacture

  • Secure and competitive energy for all

  • A net zero transition that creates UK business opportunities

  • Trade agreements that deliver for businesses in the UK

  • A UK education and visa system that provides talent for industry.

The event saw the support of speakers such as Alex Cunningham MP, Chair of the Chemical Industry All-Party Parliamentary Group; Sarah Jones MP, Shadow Minister for Industry and Decarbonization; and Nusrat Ghani MP, Minister for Industry and Economic Security, along with members from both Houses of Parliament. Their presence demonstrates the significance of our manifesto to the next Government’s agenda.

Coinciding with National Apprenticeship Week, the manifesto manifesto emphasises the importance of creating a legacy that empowers future generations. Members of the CIA's ChemTalent Leadership Group, Amy Summerton, Lucy Jones, Jonathan Vincent, and Izzy Sloan, joined the event, demonstrating their commitment to shaping the industry's future alongside the wider ChemTalent Network.

With 96% of all manufactured goods relying on chemical processes, the chemical sector assumes a critical role as a vital supplier to numerous key industries, encompassing pharmaceuticals, food, aerospace, and automotive. It stands to assist in addressing the biggest challenges of our time, from climate change and health to sustainability.

The UK chemical industry stands as the largest manufacturing exporter in the country, having already reduced emissions by 80% over the past three decades. Moreover, it provides thousands of highly skilled and well-compensated jobs, particularly in regions in need of economic stimulation. The sector has also demonstrated its criticality to the nation by providing essential solutions like hand sanitisers and COVID vaccine ingredients during times of national crisis.

Every modern economy needs a chemical industry.
