LAUNCHING November 2019

The Chemical Industries Association (CIA) and ITN Productions Industry News are producing a news and current affairs-style programme ‘Chemistry for a Better Tomorrow’ exploring the importance and the value of the chemical and pharmaceutical industry in the UK.

The chemical and pharmaceutical industry has an annual turnover of £50 billion and directly employs nearly 140,000 people. However increasing demand for chemicals worldwide, depleting resources, stricter legislation and the rising cost of waste disposal are placing increasing pressure on the industry.

In this pioneering news-style programme, national newsreader Natasha Kaplinsky invites commentary from those at the forefront of scientific endeavour to discuss the far-reaching application of the chemical industry on vital global issues including green energy, big data, the needs of an aging population, industrial decarbonisation and energy efficient roadmaps to 2050.

Underlining the importance of investment in sustainability, innovation, research and best practice, Chemistry for a Better Tomorrow’ will also showcase significant developments in careers, education, outreach programmes and STEM opportunities and will highlight the success stories from the next generation of chemists, engineers and leaders who are building a globally-competitive science-based industry in the UK and transforming modern society.

The news-style programme will combine a mixture of news items, editorial profiles and studio feature interviews and will launch at the Chemical Industries Association’s Annual CIA Day on 21 November 2019. The programme will form part of an extensive communications campaign featuring CIA members and professional partners, as well as journalists, writers, bloggers and relevant government departments.

Stephen Elliot, Chief Executive, Chemical Industries Association, said: “Following the success of our first programme, ‘Solutions for our Future’, we are pleased to again be working with ITN Productions to produce a second film, further elaborating on the themes that showcase our vital industry. This is a great year for the industry as not only are we celebrating 30 years of Responsible Care in the UK, but UNESCO have also dedicated 2019 as the International Year of the Periodic Table. The industry therefore has a lot to celebrate, which is why this programme is a fantastic platform to illustrate just how chemical businesses are transforming modern society and creating a better tomorrow.

Vicki Clubley, Interim Head of ITN Productions Industry News said: We’re delighted to be partnering with the Chemical Industries Association again to produce a programme highlighting the significance of the chemical industry in the UK.  We hope the content will provide a platform on which to exchange ideas, engage members and the wider public on the pertinent industry issues and promote ideas to shape a better future.”
