At Urenco, we are committed to promoting and advancing science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.

A key strand of our sustainability strategy is supporting education & skills through our own Richie Programme and multi-year social impact partnerships.

We provide engaging and enriching opportunities for young people to explore the possibilities of STEM such as hands-on science workshops for students near our global sites, online resources and an annual Richie Lecture.

Urenco has a long standing partnership with the Science Museum in London. We sponsor Wonderlab: The Equinor Gallery which has welcomed over two million visitors since it opened and is a sustainable and interactive way of nurturing future talent. In 2023, we announced our support for the spin-off website Wonderlab+ specifically designed to encourage and enrich young people’s science capital.

We’ve partnered with the British Science Association for a decade and the educational resources we fund are used by tens of thousands of children every year. We also support British Science Week activities such as the Smashing Sterotypes campaign.

Together with Teach First we are helping to increase the placement and training of 45 new STEM teachers which will impact 10,000 secondary students near our sites in the UK.

Our involvement within tertiary education is growing, a new partnership with Cambridge Nuclear Energy Centre provides links with the students and lecturers from this globally respected university, as well as other industry partners and curriculum input in relation to research and teaching about nuclear energy.

Addressing the skills gap and boosting the industry talent pipeline is critical as we expand our capacity and transition to a net zero future. Nuclear provides a carbon-free solution and will continue to play an important part in meeting and maintaining the UK’s energy needs.

Urenco was the first nuclear organisation to sign the Climate Pledge and has a bold ambition to be net zero in our direct operations by 2030 and as an organisation by 2040 and to support the UN SDGs through our social impact programme.
