The per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) Plan is a cross-government, science-led plan to understand impacts of PFAS on public health and the environment, with coordinated actions to minimise risks.

The revised Environmental Improvement Plan 2025 announced a commitment to take action on PFAS, commonly known as ‘forever chemicals’. This included the publication of a PFAS Plan in 2026.

The plan sets out the government’s overall approach to this issue, with actions across 3 main sections:

understanding PFAS sources

tackling PFAS pathways

reducing ongoing exposure to PFAS

Defra have also published a press release, and a blog, to explain more about PFAS, and the actions that this plan will help to bring forward.
