On 22 December 2025, Defra published its response to the consultation on the UK REACH registration deadlines’ extension for transitional substances.
The formal decision of Defra is to stick with their preferred option, Option 1, which will extend the deadlines to October 2029, October 2030, and October 2031 respectively. This only leaves a 1-year gap between deadlines. click here to read.
The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) has published their revised Environmental Improvement Plan (EIP) 2025. The full document is now available to the public and can be accessed via this link: Environmental Improvement Plan 2025 - GOV.UK The EIP sets out ten goals for driving forward environmental improvements across the UK. Notably, Goal 4 focuses on Chemicals and Pesticides, addressing key issues as part of Chapter 2 on ‘Environmental Quality’ - commitments and actions for this goal are outlined on pages 58-63 of the Plan.
Last week, the European Parliament voted in favour of adopting “One Substance, One Assessment” (OSOA), a legislative package consisting of three complementary proposals intended to streamline chemical safety assessments across EU legislation. The reform is part of the 2020 EU Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability (CSS), designed to improve the protection of citizens and the environment and to boost innovation, by developing safe and sustainable chemicals. It is also part of the EU’s zero pollution vision for 2050.
