The Chemical Industries Association (CIA) was pleased to welcome Richard Lochhead MSP, Scotland’s Minister for Business, to INEOS Grangemouth for a valuable meeting with members of the CIA Scotland Site Leaders Network. The visit provided an important opportunity for senior leaders from across the chemical sector to engage directly with the Minister and discuss the realities of doing business in Scotland today.
Chaired by Cammy Mitchell of GSK and hosted by Andy Hughes of INEOS, the session enabled CIA member companies to share insights on both the strengths and challenges faced by the industry. Topics ranged from energy costs and regulatory pressures to supply chain resilience and long-term competitiveness. These discussions reflected the CIA’s core role as the leading representative body for the UK chemical industry, bringing member voices together to influence policy, shape national strategy and foster a business environment that supports growth, innovation and sustainability.
The meeting also provided a platform to highlight Project 2035, the CIA’s strategic vision for a thriving and sustainable chemical industry in the UK. As the association prepares to report on Project 2035’s progress in Parliament, the visit underlined the critical importance of the sector to national priorities. The chemical industry continues to play a central role in enabling clean energy, advancing technological innovation and strengthening regional economies. It supports high-value employment and delivers essential solutions that underpin the country’s net zero ambitions.
To realise the full potential of this vision, the CIA is calling for action in three key areas: competitive energy and raw material costs, smarter regulation that enables investment and growth and bold partnerships that equip the workforce with the skills of tomorrow. These priorities form the backbone of the CIA’s policy agenda and reflect the direct input of its members across the UK.
This meeting with the Minister for Business reaffirmed the strength of industry-government engagement in Scotland and the importance of a united voice for the chemical sector. As the CIA launches its Project 2035 campaign, it will continue to champion the strategic value of the industry and its essential contribution to the UK’s economic and environmental future.
What is Project 2035?
As we continue our efforts to inform and shape strategic long-term initiatives, we acknowledge the urgent need for action opposite both the threats and opportunities faced by our sector. In this context, the Chemical Industries Association (CIA) joined forces with S&P Global to take an independent look at the current and near-future resilience of the chemical industry in the UK based on desk research and widespread industry engagement.
